The Kansas City Chiefs will have a familiar face joining the coaching staff soon.
Former NFL receiver L’Damian Washington announced on Twitter that he’d been selected by the Chiefs as a coaching fellow through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He’s the first of many coaching fellows to be revealed for Kansas City.
Washington signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Missouri back in 2014. He bounced around the league through 2015, making his final stop with the Chiefs during their training camp that year. Washington even appeared during a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks but failed to catch his lone target.
After the NFL, Washington spent time in the CFL (Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers) the AAF (Birmingham Iron) and the XFL (St. Louis Battlehawks). In 2019, Washington first got into coaching as the head coach at West Middle School in Colombia, Missouri.

This isn’t the first time that the Chiefs have chosen someone that they’re familiar with as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. Last year, Reid had former Eagles LB Jamar Chaney. In 2018, former Chiefs LB Shawn Barber was among the group of fellows. Back in 2017, former Eagles QB Mike Vick was among those selected by the team.
The fellowship serves as a tool for ascending and aspiring minority coaches to get hands-on experience with coaching in the NFL. Once Washington arrives in Kansas City, he’ll get the opportunity to observe, learn and coach alongside Reid and his staff.
