Kyrie Irving not looking to ‘be a celebrity,’ sole focus is basketball

To put it mildly, Kyrie Irving didn’t have much to say following the Celtics’ loss to the Houston Rockets on Sunday. It’s not the first time he’s had little to say this season, but it’s still a relatively new thing for Irving in Boston.

However, in his media availability a day or two after games, Irving appears to welcome the questioning a bit more. (Though the days of his 400-word soliloquies seem to be behind him.) Monday was another example of this, with Irving offering up some responses that were longer than his entire press conference on Sunday, including one where he discussed his current focus, according to Tom Westerholm of MassLive.

I didn’t really come into this game to be cameras in my face, be famous, be a celebrity, whatever embodies that. It’s a little hard for me. I wanted those things when I was younger, but now … I just want to play basketball at a very high level.

Irving also discussed his opinion on the media and their continuous criticism of players in the NBA:

If Irving is, in fact, done spending time on his celebrity status, that could be a sign he’ll stay in Boston after the 2018-19 season. Or at least it means he has less reason to go to New York.
