Kyrie Irving leaves pickup game after catching an elbow to his face

NEW YORK _ Kyrie Irving was hit with an elbow to his face during a pickup game Tuesday morning, prompting the Nets point guard to visit with team doctors.

GM Sean Marks witnessed the injury and downplayed the severity, saying the team was just doing its due diligence.

Irving was accompanied to the doctors by coach Kenny Atkinson, who coincidentally was scheduled to conduct his preseason press conference Tuesday afternoon and had to cancel.

"Kyrie gets checked out like everybody else," Marks said. "We always send staff with them (to the doctor) and this is a great opportunity for Kenny to be with him."

Marks declined to describe the scene of the injury or if there was blood. Irving has been training at the facility in Brooklyn for weeks.

If he's available for Media Day on Friday, Irving will make his first public comments since signing with the Nets on a four-year, $141 million deal.

Maybe he'll show up with a few stitches. Hopefully not a fracture or a concussion.
