The University of Tokyo moved down from the No. 1 spot in the Japan university rankings announced by British education magazine Times Higher Education on Wednesday, leaving Kyoto University in sole possession of the top rank.

It was the third Japan-specific survey conducted by the publisher behind the world's most influential university rankings. The University of Tokyo had spent two consecutive years in first place.

About 330 schools nationwide took part in the survey. Fifteen of those ranked in the top 20 were national universities.

The University of Tokyo was 42nd in the world rankings last year, well ahead of Kyoto University's 65th. Research capabilities carry significant weight in the world rankings, while the rankings for Japan are said to focus on the depth of the education offered and its results, as well as the universities' level of internationalism.
