The J.League has fined 2nd-tier soccer team Kyoto Sanga F.C. 1 million yen because one of its fans waved a flag featuring a Nazi emblem during a preseason fixture.
A supporter in the stands behind Kyoto's goal waved a flag with a symbol that resembles the skull-and-bones insignia of Germany's Nazi-era SS paramilitary unit during a match against Cerezo Osaka at Sanga Stadium in Kyoto on Feb. 9, according to the J.League.
The club issued a stern warning to the supporter, who has apologized saying he didn't know its meaning was linked to discrimination.
"The club neglected to punish the offender as the violation had not been discovered since the flag was created in 2009," the Kyoto Sanga president said in a statement.
"We are taking this incident very seriously and will take thorough measures to prevent a recurrence."
