Kyogo gets slight Celtic rest as merciful international break sees Japan play it safe

Celtic star Kyogo was given something of a rest on international duty as he was benched for his country on Thursday night.

It was the September break that had Hoops fans fearing the worst when he limped off with a knee complaint against China.

He'd go on to miss the three league games that month with four points dropped out of nine in his absence.

So while Celtic fans would love for Kyogo to shine for his national side, Ange Postecoglou was right to point out he arrived in Scotland having played most of a J-League season already.

That means any opportunity for downtime is welcomed and he only played 15 minutes for Japan in their World Cup 2022 qualifier against Vietnam overnight.

Junya Ito's first half goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win and it clawed back some ground on Australia who were held 0-0 by Saudi Arabia.

Japan travel further west to face Oman on Tuesday before he'll link back up with his Celtic team-mates for next weekend's Premier Sports Cup semi-final against St Johnstone at Hampden.
