Kyogo Furuhashi catches flight for Celtic transfer as incoming star sends airport message to fans

Incoming striker Kyogo Furuhashi has departed Japan as he heads for a new beginning at Celtic.

Manager Ange Postecoglou landed the highly-rated Vissel Kobe star last week but faces a wait to begin working with him.

The forward faces a quarantine period before being allowed to meet his new team-mates and could complete his isolation in London before heading for Lennoxtown.

Furuhashi was filmed at Itami Airport by journalist Dan Orlowitz as he prepared to board a flight to the UK, where's he expected to undergo a medical before his transfer is finalised.

And the 26-year-old had some first words for Celtic fans as he travelled.

"I'm excited and I'm going to do it. I want to get results. I want to grow," Furuhashi told Yahoo Japan.

"Scores and assists. I've always wanted visible results this year, so going to Celtic doesn't change.

"I have to establish my position in a new team, so I'd like to focus on that first."

Furuhashi's arrival has excited Celtic fans, not least given his impressive record in the J-League and the fact he can count Andres Iniesta among his admirers.

Postecoglou admits he's been frustrated by the constraints the Covid-19 pandemic has placed on his transfer rebuild, with time of the essence as Celtic begin their Champions League qualifying campaign against Midtjylland on Tuesday night.

He said last week: “It’s not just about signing players, it’s how we can get them in.

“It’s a ten-day to two-week process so that’s the challenging part at the moment, we’re not able to get people in quick enough.

“We’d all be taking photos and we’d be unveiling him here today. Unfortunately nothing like that happens any more.

“We are working on multiple fronts.

“It’s pretty clear we need to bring players in. That’s not an easy process but we are working hard, hopefully in the next week.”
