KYOTO -- The suspect in last year's arson attack at a Kyoto Animation Co. studio that killed 36 people appeared at the Kyoto District Court on a stretcher on Tuesday.
Appearing in public for the first time since the attack, Shinji Aoba remained on a stretcher throughout the proceedings, at which the grounds for his detention were disclosed.
Aoba, 42, was arrested on May 27 on suspicion of murder and other offenses. The district court authorized his detention on the same day.
On the following day, his lawyer filed a quasi-appeal, asking for the detention order to be revoked because "there is no feasibility that he can destruct evidence or escape."
Following the rejection of the appeal, the lawyer on June 2 requested the district court disclose the grounds for his detention.
As Aoba remains unable to sit up unassisted, police questioning has been conducted at his bedside since the arrest.
