Kylie Jenner donates $1 million to Australian firefighting efforts after ‘insensitive’ social media post

Kylie Jenner has donated $1 million (£762,000) towards the relief effort in Australia after the country was devastated by wildfires, a representative for the star has said.

So far 25 people have been killed, 2,000 homes have been destroyed and millions of animals are feared to have died after an area twice the size of the US state of Maryland was scorched.

Jenner was recently was criticised for an “insensitive” social media post after she followed a post about the people and animals suffering in the blazes with a snap of her baby pink Louis Vuitton slides, which were made with mink fur.

She later posted a snap of herself next to a controlled fire with the caption: "Find your fire." Jenner has since altered the caption.

The star’s donation comes following pledges from A-listers including Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue and the Hemsworth brothers.

Sir Elton also pledged $1 million, announcing the news on stage in Sydney.

At a concert earlier this week, he told the audience they should be “in awe of the work that the firefighters are doing”.

He added: “This is a magnificent country that I’ve been coming to since 1971.

“I love it here so much. To see what is happening here breaks my heart and so we have to come together and we have to fight, and this is my bit towards it.”

Sir Elton did not say whether his donation was in Australian or US dollars, which would be worth around £524,000 and £762,000 respectively.

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth told his 39 million Instagram followers: “Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia.

“My family and I are contributing a million dollars. Hopefully you guys can chip in too.

“Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated.”

The Minogue family has pledged $500,000 to help with the response to the fire.

The devastating fires took centre stage at the Golden Globes on Sunday, where stars including Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman highlighted the situation in Australia.

Fleabag star and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge revealed she would be auctioning off the suit she wore to the award ceremony and donating the proceeds towards the response to the fires.
