Kylian Mbappe urged to join Liverpool as £80m signing would make next stage of Jurgen Klopp era

Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Monday, July 12.

Kylian Mbappe sent Liverpool transfer message

France World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit believes a move to Liverpool could be the 'best fit' for Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe remains one of the hottest prospects in world football with the Reds frequently mooted as future suitors.

The 22-year-old shot to stardom with Monaco in 2016 before helping France to World Cup glory two years later.

But Mbappe suffered disappointment at Euro 2020 this summer as his penalty miss sent France out of the tournament at the hands of Switzerland.

With a year remaining on his contract, Mbappe and PSG are at loggerheads as they look to extend his contract at the Parc des Princes or risk him leaving on a free transfer.

Speaking to Goal, former Arsenal midfielder Petit said: "There are so few clubs in the world that can afford to pay his wages so it’s possible that if he did leave he would come to the Premier League.

"The best fit for him might be Liverpool."

£80m signing would start Jurgen Klopp evolution

Jurgen Klopp has a wide range of options for his midfield heading in 2021/22, but he doesn’t have many players who are both of peak age and also available for selection on a consistent basis.

Fabinho is the best example, but aside from him the Liverpool manager has a trio of veterans, a relative rookie in Curtis Jones, and two midfielders who are in their mid-twenties but struggle with their fitness.

It would therefore make sense for the Reds to consider adding a midfield man who is in the sweet spot in terms of age and match availability, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could be just the player they are looking for.

The 26-year-old has been with Lazio for six years and has averaged 32 league starts across the last five seasons. According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are interested in bringing the Serbian international to Anfield.

The figures quoted in the article immediately suggest this may just be a rumour with no basis. Lazio are supposedly looking for 100million euros with the Reds only willing to go to somewhere between 70 and 80million.

That’s an incredibly large transfer fee at the best of times, never mind when counting the cost of playing largely behind closed doors for over a year.

However, a look at Milinkovic-Savic’s data makes it easy to see why Liverpool would be interested in acquiring him, even if the funds required may make that outcome unlikely.

New Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi was in charge of Lazio last season and deployed his troops in 3-5-2 system with wingbacks.

Milinkovic-Savic usually played on the right of the midfield three, often alongside former Reds Luis Alberto and Lucas Leiva. With Pepe Reina in goal, Liverpool’s supposed transfer target has had ample opportunity to learn about life at the club.
