Kylian Mbappe mocked the suggestion that Ligue 1 is a "farmer's league" after Lyon reached the Champions League semi-final with a 3-1 defeat against Manchester City.
Lyon, who finished seventh in a curtailed Ligue 1 season, became the second French club to qualify for the final four after Mbappe's Paris Saint-Germain overcame a stubborn Atalanta side on Wednesday.
PSG will now play German side RB Leipzig on Tuesday for a place in the final, while Lyon will face the in-form Bayern Munich on Wednesday as they both both to become the first French side to win the Champions League since Marseille in 1993.
If both clubs progress, it will be the first all-French final in the history of the modern Champions League.
And while the French league has long held a reputation beneath that of Europe's remaining four 'major' leagues, Mbappe certainly feels the duo have made a statement over the last week.
In a post on his Twitter account, Mbappe wrote: "FARMERS LEAGUE", with an emoji of a clown laid adjacent.
While Pep Guardiola's side were certainly not at their best, Lyon emerged worthy winners with a performance of real grit, showing a clinical edge as they scored three of their six shots on target.
They took the lead after 24 minutes as Maxwel Cornet curled an exquisite effort into the bottom corner with Kyle Walker playing Karl Toko-Ekambi onside in the build-up.
City appeared to have regained the momentum as Kevin De Bruyne produced a stunning finish to level with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The French side proved their resilience as substitute Moussa Dembele put the underdogs ahead once more, before the Frenchman doubled his tally to put the game to bed after a shocking Raheem Sterling miss.
