Kylian Mbappe left out in the cold as Paris Saint Germain superstar snubbed by France team mates

Crestfallen Kylian Mbappe trudged a lonely path back to the France dressing room after their shock defeat to Switzerland.

The Euro 2020 favourites surrendered a 3-1 last 16 lead before losing their nerve in a dramatic penalty shoot-out - with the Paris Saint-Germain superstar missing the decisive kick.

Mbappe, who also spurned a glorious opportunity to win it in extra time, looked decidedly nervous as he approached Jan Sommer's goal and his poorly placed effort was clawed away by the Swiss keeper.

That sparked jubilant scenes among the underdogs as they celebrated an incredible victory over the star-studded world champions.

But while the victors embraced, Mbappe was the loneliest man in Bucharest.

Get French Football News report defender Lucas Digne - who didn't play through injury - was the only player to console shell-shocked 22-year-old as he trudged away. Pictures do show he was at least joined by Marcus Thuram as well but many of his team-mates appeared to steer clear as he made his way down the tunnel.

France boss Didier Deschamps admitted afterwards the forward was wracked with guilty over the miss.

He said: "Kylian takes responsibility, he feels guilty, but he shouldn't.

"The squad is united, it always has been."

Mbappe himself issued a statement on social media just after midnight on Tuesday.

He wrote: "I am sorry for the penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed.

"It will be hard to sleep but sadly these are the risks of a sport I love so much."
