Kylian Mbappe followed in a Newcastle United great's footsteps as fans relive special night

Kylian Mbappe brought back some fond memories for Newcastle United supporters on Tuesday night after the PSG superstar followed in Tino Asprilla's footsteps by scoring a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Champions League.

The Frenchman took home the match ball at the Nou Camp after bagging three goals in PSG's stunning 4-1 win against the Catalan giants.

Lionel Messi had actually given the hosts the lead from the spot on 27 minutes, but Mbappe ultimately upstaged the Barcelona legend in his own back yard to become just the third player in Champions League history to score a hat-trick against Barca.

Indeed, you had to go back to 1997, when Asprilla and Andriy Shevchenko filled their boots for Newcastle and Dynamo Kiev respectively, for the last time an individual managed to put three goals past Barcelona in one game.

Naturally, that statistic had Newcastle fans reminiscing on social media about the Magpies' 3-2 win against Barca at St James' Park.

Shay Given already knew that Newcastle supporters could make a lot of noise, but that was the night the goalkeeper realised just how loud they could be.

"I think the younger fans won't remember it but the older ones will know and think, 'Bloody hell, where were you the night we beat Barcelona?'" Given previously told ChronicleLive.

"It was a special night. I think they just thought they just had to turn up and win the game but we had different ideas.

"Tino Asprilla had a hat-trick and I remember Keith Gillespie was absolutely unbelievable. I think he might have set up two of the goals. He just ran the full-back [Sergi] ragged.

"We were hanging on a wee bit towards the end but the atmosphere was just electric. That was special."
