Kylian Mbappe controversially denied penalty against Senegal after VAR review – here’s why

  • Kylian Mbappe was controversially denied a penalty during France’s World Cup clash with Senegal on Tuesday.
  • Mbappe appeared to be brought down in the penalty area by Sadio Mane, but the referee waved away his protests and pointed for a corner kick.
  • VAR got involved and recommended that the referee review the incident on his pitchside monitor.
  • After looking at the incident, the referee decided to stick with his original decision and announced to the stadium that Mbappe had “initiated the contact” with the defender.
  • Just minutes after the controversial decision, Mbappe did finally get on the scoresheet to give France the lead.
