Kylian Mbappe contract situation, David Alaba offer and other Liverpool transfer rumours rated

Jurgen Klopp is not one to rush into the transfer market and no major signing is expected at Liverpool in the final two weeks of the window.

But despite quiet activity in the winter market so far, there are still plenty of developments and speculation around the footballing world.

These included what the club's plans are at the position and two superstars who have been linked with Merseyside transfers in recent months.

Here are the latest Liverpool transfer rumours.

Liverpool 'ready to compete' for Mbappe

Liverpool are reportedly ready to compete for Paris Saint-Germain winger Kylian Mbappe, who is in the final two years of his contract and is yet put pen to paper to extend his stay in the French capital.

While Mauricio Pochettino's appointment could change things, it is highly possible that Mbappe leaves PSG, either this summer or when his current deal expires in 2022, and Liverpool have repeatedly been named as a potential landing spot.

And this week, Spanish publication Sport via Sport Witness reports that Liverpool are ready to financially compete with Real Madrid to sign the Frenchman, who would command a substantial fee and wage packet.

The report claims that Jurgen Klopp believes Mbappe is the ideal player to freshen up his squad and is supposedly in regular contact with the player's representatives.

Alaba looks set for Madrid move

David Alaba is set to sign a four-year contract with Madrid after running down his deal with Bayern Munich, per Fabrizio Romano.

The Austrian international rejected Bayern's contract offer earlier this season and has been free to formally discuss terms with overseas clubs from January 1, with a free transfer in the summer now widely anticipated.

And Romano reports for the Guardian that Alaba has agreed to a four-year deal with Madrid, turning down approaches from PSG and Liverpool in the process.

Liverpool had eyed Alaba as a potential solution to their centre-back crisis, though with a January sale always unlikely, Alaba's arrival in the summer would have come after the returns of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk from injury.

No centre-back spending

Liverpool are not expected to spend at the centre-back position this month, per Mark Ogden of ESPN.

Many had hoped for Liverpool to address the injury-stricken position in January. Klopp has even had to play midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson at the position, including in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

However, speaking on ESPN FC, Ogden reported that the club is unlikely to invest in the next two weeks due to the financial pressures of the current situation.

"There isn’t any money there," he said. "That’s the thing, I think if they’re gonna get one in, it’ll be a loan signing or a player that has got a contract situation at the club where they needed to get him out to lower his wages.

"There’s just no money in the game right now. I think in an ideal world, they’d do what they did three or four years ago with Van Dijk and spend a lot of money on [Dayot] Upamecano at Leipzig, but it’s just not going to happen.

"Obviously, Van Dijk and Gomez will be back next season, so they don’t want to spend too much on a player that might not play."
