Kylian Mbappe boost, Wijnaldum replacement eyed and Liverpool transfer rumours rated

On the pitch, Liverpool got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.

Goals from Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane sealed an impressive win for Jurgen Klopp's side, as the Reds got their stuttering title defence back on track.

The result came at a cost, though, with Joel Matip unable to return for the second half and Klopp has now confirmed that the centre-back has an ankle ligament problem.

The defender's injury could force Liverpool to now look at a short-term stop gap before the January transfer window closes, with Klopp admitting that the club would look at their options before Monday's deadline.

With this said, we have collected and rated all of the latest Liverpool -related transfer stories and rumours.

Liverpool 'favourites' for Mbappe

Who?

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe

What?

As reported by AS, French journalist Geoffroy Garetier has claimed on Canal Plus that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer.

The World Cup winner's contract in Paris expires in 2022, but there is no progress on talks over a new deal.

Mbappe has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid, but it now claimed that Liverpool are in pole position to beat the La Liga side to the Frenchman.

Speaking last week, Mbappe said: "I want to think about what I want to do in the next few years, where I want to be, this is how my thinking goes. But it is true that soon we will have to make a decision.

“I do not want to sign a contract [with PSG] and say a year later that I want to leave. If I sign it, it is to stay, and that deserves time for reflection.”

Liverpool 'scout' Wijnaldum replacement

Who?

Lille’s Renato Sanches and Brighton's Yves Bissouma.

What?

With doubt over the long term future of midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, it has been claimed that the Reds are already eyeing potential replacements should the Dutchman depart Anfield this summer.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are scouting several players.

“We’re talking about players being scouted rather than talks at the moment,” he said to Anfield Watch.

“Bissouma has been scouted and is appreciated as a player but I’ll mention Renato Sanches as well.

“There were rumours about Renato signing in January but that was never going to happen because Liverpool are not signing anyone this month.

“But, if Wijnaldum leaves in the summer, then Sanches could be a good opportunity for Liverpool.

“They are looking at him as well as Bissouma because Lille need money – they will need to sell players next summer – and in my opinion, Renato Sanches could be a great opportunity and he’s been scouted too.

“Liverpool have a list and they’ll decide in April who they want to go for.”

Arsenal defender touted as perfect stop gap

Who?

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi.

What?

With Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk both out with a long term injury, and Matip now facing a spell on the sidelines, Liverpool have been urged to sign a defender on a temporary basis.

“I’m not saying you are going to go and get your ‘A’ class, main centre-back right now, but there must be some sort of stopgap somewhere to fill that void,” former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said on BT Sport on Thursday.

“Because you are saying now, ‘we will play with a central midfield partnership that are now going to be our centre-back partnership, or I’m going to play with two very inexperienced players.”

Jermaine Jenas then proposed Arsenal defender Mustafi as a potential solution.

“Let’s just say that stopgap was Sokratis who came in, or Mustafi” he said.

“A centre-half out there who’s not getting a game. Are Liverpool fans going to be happy about it?”

“Is Jurgen Klopp looking at that and saying, ‘I’ve got an actual centre-half and this is better than Fabinho and Matip, or Henderson and Fabinho?

“Is it better, that stopgap, than what you’ve already got? It was a problem before January so you’d think they’d have someone lined up…”
