Kyler Murray will play it safer in preseason than in practice

Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Kyler Murray said recently he purposely challenges cornerback Patrick Peterson in practice at least once a day. After all, Peterson is one of the very best at his position in the game, so learning what he can get away with when it is only practice makes sense.

Some might call it a very good practice habit.

However, things will change for Murray once the games start, even in the preseason.

“In practice, I let it go,” he explained this week. “I don’t really try to be cautious.”

He said he does try to rein it in “if it gets out of hand, which it usually doesn’t.” He wants to have good days at practice but will take risks.

When the go lights on for the game on Thursday, he will treat it differently.

“During preseason, I’ll treat it like a regular game, go through reads and if it’s not there, don’t let it go, don’t trigger it,” he said. “But if it’s there, we’re going to deliver the ball.”

He isn’t expected to play much Thursday, so we will only get a limited look at how he balances risk and reward in game settings.
