For years, one of the greatest quarterback rivalries we saw in the National Football League was Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. They both were the best in the league at their positions, their teams consistently made the postseason and they seemed to face one another year in and year out.
Manning has since retired and Touchdown Wire’s Michael Colangelo came up with some potential QB rivalries for the years to come in the league.
Some could be quite compelling, such as Baker Mayfield vs. Patrick Mahomes.
Colangelo also jokingly adds Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Kyler Murray to the list, rivaling New York Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones.
However, if Murray is what the Cardinals believe he can be, he should become half of at least one great rivalry.
The most logical would be Murray vs. Russell Wilson. The two are short. The two played baseball. Both are mobile. Wilson is Murray’s player comp. They will face one another at least twice every year.
Two other intriguing rivalries would be against AFC teams, which is not as intriguing because they would face each other only once every four years unless they meet in the Super Bowl. Murray vs. Mayfield would be fun because of their Oklahoma connection, having been teammates, having been both Heisman Trophy winners and No. 1 overall picks. The two will face each other this coming December.
The other would be against Josh Rosen of the Miami Dolphins, as Murray replaced Rosen on the Cardinals. This is a natural rivalry because of the situation leading up to Murray being drafted by Arizona but it will only be a real rivalry if the Cardinals and Dolphins play in multiple Super Bowls against one another.
All of this only happens if Murray becomes an elite quarterback. The Cardinals believe he will be. Now we will see what happens in the years to come.
