Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne missing from Man City confirmed squad for Olympiacos

Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne have been rested for Manchester City's Champions League game at Olympiacos.

The pair, who have been two of the players most used by Pep Guardiola this season, trained at the City Football Academy with the rest of the squad on Tuesday morning but did not travel with the Blues to Greece as the manager welcomes back Fernandinho, Aleks Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy into his group.

City will confirm their qualification for the last-16 with a win in Piraeus, although they will have to wait at least another week to wrap up top spot. However, with more players to choose from and with the Premier League game with Burnley at the weekend a priority given the amount of dropped points in that competition already, Guardiola has opted to leave two of his first team regulars at home.

Felix Nmecha, Tommy Doyle, and Cole Palmer have travelled as part of the 23-man squad and will be at least on the bench on Wednesday night given UEFA allows 12 substitutes. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Adrian Bernabe, and Liam Delap also trained with the group on Tuesday but have stayed in Manchester.

With only Nathan Ake sidelined (and with an injury that is not expected to keep him out for long) Guardiola hopes that the extra competition provided by the returning faces can drive up standards and consistency in the squad as there is more of a fight for places in the starting XI every week.

CITY SQUAD: Ederson, Steffen, Carson, Cancelo, Stones, Dias, Laporte, Garcia, Mendy, Zinchenko, Rodri, Gundogan, Fernandinho, Bernardo, Doyle, Foden, Nmecha, Palmer, Mahrez, Torres, Sterling, Jesus, Aguero
