Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy absent from Man City squad vs Southampton

Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy were left out of the Manchester City squad to face Southampton after their efforts on Thursday night.

Pep Guardiola has been clear that the Blues are looking to avoid injuries in the hectic fixture list and the absence of both Walker and Mendy at St Mary's was advised as precautionary rather than down to any problems picked up. The pair have played four out of the five matches since the restart including the last three in a row, with both rested for the home game with Burnley.

Joao Cancelo and Aleks Zinchenko come into the team as part of six changes from the side that beat Liverpool on Thursday night. Fernandinho, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez also come in, while Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden drop to the bench.

Explaining why he made so many changes, the manager said: "We play every three days, a lot of games ahead. All the players deserve to play for the way they play and they train and behave."

City can move onto 69 points with a win over Southampton, that would leave them needing just two points mathematically from their remaining five games to secure a Champions League place for next season - providing the club are successful in their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

That is the only remaining priority in the league, with the team looking ahead to an FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal in July and the second leg of their last-16 clash with Real Madrid the following month.
