Kyle Shurmur ready to impress Giants and their familiar head coach

Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur is ready to do what only a very small handful of people have ever done — take part in the NFL Combine under the watchful eye of their father.

While parents watching on isn’t out of the norm, the fact that Kyle’s father, Pat Shurmur, is head coach of the New York Giants — a team looking for a quarterback — makes his situation historically unique.

“My dad’s got a job to do, which is do what he can to help the Giants win games and lead them to a Super Bowl,” Kyle Shurmur told the New York Daily News. “And my job’s to do my best and show teams I can positively contribute. But it’ll definitely be cool seeing my dad there.

“Every once in a while he’ll give me a pointer or two, but he’s gotta act in best of the New York Giants. He’s not out there trying to help his son — he’s got a job to do with the Giants. But it is a unique situation, and it’s cool.”

“Unique” is an understatement.

According to the New York Daily News, only four times over the previous 35 years has a player taken part in the NFL Combine while a parent served as a head coach or general manager in the league.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Kyle is pushing to join the Giants. Rather, he’s just looking for the right situation, whether that be New York or elsewhere.

“I just wanna go to any team where they feel I have the ability to positively contribute to the team,” Kyle said. “And I want to go to a place where I get an opportunity to compete and positively contribute in any way. Any team would be a blessing and a great opportunity.”

Kyle went through measurements on Wednesday and will take the field alongside Dwayne Haskins, Kyler Murray and others later this week.
