Kyle Schwarber's two homers pace Cubs to 10-3 win against Indians

CLEVELAND _ The Cubs took precautionary measures Tuesday night by keeping slugger Kris Bryant out of the lineup against the Indians.

"He's not bouncy, but he's fine," Maddon said.

The Cubs responded impressively as they rolled to a 10-3 win over the Indians at soggy Progressive Field. Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, and Willson Contreras and Ian Happ each hit solo homers.

Happ's three hits paced a 15-hit attack. Happ hit a single with two outs in the second to Addison Russell and cap a two-run rally, and he followed with a homer in the fourth to knock out Indians starter Josh Tomlin.

Happ added a single during a three-run seventh. Contreras' homer in the third was his first of the season.

Tyler Chatwood became the first Cubs pitcher to pitch into the seventh this season, although he was pulled after allowing a single to Tyler Naquin to start the seventh. Chatwood walked five but limited the Indians to four hits while walking five and striking out five.

Right fielder Jason Heyward made a strong, one-hop throw to home plate to nail Rajai Davis for the final out of the third, and he made a sliding catch to rob Jason Kipnis of a hit in the sixth.

On Sunday, Bryant was hit by a 96-mph pitch by the Rockies' German Marquez in the first inning and left the game with medical assistance.

Maddon said his conversation with Bryant was "very good, very, very honest."

Maddon said Bryant told him he felt pretty good, but he still wanted to be "certain."

"I guess he wanted to see the doctor, all the normal kind of stuff," Maddon said.

"I said, 'listen, you need to evaluate this yourself. You need to do what you think is the right thing to do. I'm not here to tell you that. You know how you feel. Go talk to the doctor. We're not going to start you right now. If you feel better during the game, let me know. We might be able to utilize you during the game. Let's see how this plays out for (Wednesday).'

"He's fine, it's my point. He just has to work through some things."

Maddon has been sensitive to the matter because Dickie Thon, his first minor-league teammate, never fully recovered from a beaning. Also Maddon saw former Angels standout Tim Salmon get beaned twice and was close with Don Zimmer, who had a plate put in his head after a beaning and snapped at anyone who threw at the head of batters.

Bryant has not been ruled out for Wednesday night's game.
