Kyle Lafferty urges Connor Goldson to extend Rangers contract as he issues 'just another player' England warning

Kyle Lafferty has urged Connor Goldson to sign a new contract at Rangers and get them into the Champions League.

The former Ibrox striker believes his old team-mate should commit his future to new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Goldson is out of contract next summer but so far has failed to agree a deal to stay.

Next month, he can talk to other clubs and could yet link up with his old Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard, who left for Aston Villa in November.

But Van Bronckhorst has revealed that the Ibrox hierarchy are still in talks with the player’s agents and he hasn’t given up hope of keeping his vice-captain.

Lafferty has warned the 28-year-old if he’s looking for a move to England he won’t experience anywhere like Rangers.

He insists Goldson can still be a key player for Van Bronckhorst if he can thrash out a new contract and help them retain their Premiership title.

He said: “There’s a saying that the grass isn’t always greener. And there aren’t many clubs in England where you think: ‘I want to leave Rangers to go there.’

“Connor has been an exceptional player for the club and if he leaves it’ll be a sad day for Rangers fans.

“He will be on decent money and if the club have offered him a new contract it’ll be on improved terms.

“It’s just whether he wants to go to the Premier League and test himself against the so-called world-class players down there.

“If it’s anything other than that, I’d tell him to consider his options carefully.

“He was on the front line for Rangers last season, playing every game, and was a pivotal player.

“He wore his heart on his sleeve, fought for every ball and was a big reason why they achieved success.

“But not many places will make him feel so valued like that. In England, he’ll just become another player.

“I know he’s not a Rangers fan so it’s easy for me to say it because I am. I know how it feels as a supporter.

“He’ll look at everything. But I’d tell him to hold fire, taste Champions League football next season with Rangers and try to take the club as far as they can go.

“Playing in front of a full house of Rangers fans – you just don’t get that type of atmosphere anywhere in England.”
