Kyle Lafferty leaves Sunderland as summer clear-out begins

Kyle Lafferty has left Sunderland following the expiry of his short-term deal, the club has confirmed.

The Northern Ireland international striker joined the Black Cats in January but, with the season curtailed due to the Covid-19 crisis and no start date set for the new campaign, he has now left Wearside.

The 32-year-old former Glasgow Rangers man made 11 appearances for Sunderland, including two starts, and scored two goals - both coming in the 2-2 draw against Gillingham at the Stadium of Light in March.

A club statement confirming Lafferty's departure added: "Everyone at SAFC would like to wish Kyle the best of luck for the future."

Lafferty was brought in as cover and competition for Charlie Wyke.

He had been playing for Sarpsborg before moving to Sunderland, but was out of contract when the season in Norway ended in November.

Lafferty is one of 11 Sunderland first-teamers who are out of contract this summer and whose futures are set to be decided over the next fortnight.

Also on that list are Jon McLaughlin, Josh Scowen, Chris Maguire, Duncan Watmore, Joel Lynch, Jack Baldwin, Tom Flanagan, Alim Ozturk, Ethan Robson, and Benji Kimpioka.
