Kyle Lafferty becomes Sunderland's first signing of the January transfer window

Sunderland have signed Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty, as Phil Parkinson begins his January recruitment drive.

Northern Ireland striker Lafferty, who was a free agent after leaving Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08, has joined the Black Cats on a short-term deal running until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old agreed personal terms and underwent a medical on Wearside this afternoon but did not sign in time to be eligible for tomorrow's game against league leaders Wycombe Wanderers at the Stadium of Light.

Parkinson said: "I'm pleased to welcome Kyle to the club and I'm really looking working with him.

"He's an experienced striker who provides us with another option in the final third.

"He adds competition for places at the top end of the pitch, which is something I felt we needed."

Former Rangers, Norwich City and Burnley man Lafferty becomes Parkinson's first signing since he took over in October and his arrival strengthens the Black Cats in an area in which they desperately needed to bring in reinforcements this month.

Parkinson is also hoping to add another frontman during the January window with Burton Albion's Liam Boyce and Bristol City youngster Antoine Semenyo among those on his list.

He is also on the lookout for a midfielder and a defender as he looks to prepare Sunderland for a tilt at promotion in the second half of the campaign.
