Kyle Jamieson joins New Zealand's World Cup squad as cover amidst injury concerns

NEW DELHI: In response to ongoing injury concerns within the New Zealand cricket team, the Black Caps have called upon Kyle Jamieson to bolster their World Cup squad as a precautionary measure. Jamieson, who was previously with the squad in India as cover for Tim Southee, is set to join the team in Bengaluru ahead of their crucial pool game against Pakistan on Saturday.

New Zealand's head coach, Gary Stead, explained that with fast bowler Matt Henry awaiting the results of a scan on his right hamstring and fellow pacer Lockie Ferguson recovering from an Achilles injury, it was essential to have adequate cover in place.

Stead acknowledged the importance of maintaining a full complement of bowlers, especially given the severity of Matt Henry's injury and the short turnaround before the Pakistan clash. He stated, "The severity of Matt's injury, combined with a short turnaround to Pakistan, meant we couldn't risk being a bowler down for Saturday. Matt's been a world-class performer for us in ODI cricket for the past two World Cup cycles, so we've got our fingers crossed for the scan results later today."

Kyle Jamieson, a towering 28-year-old fast bowler with 14 wickets in 13 ODIs to his name, is expected to make a swift adjustment to the Indian conditions. Coach Stead expressed confidence in Jamieson's adaptability, saying, "Kyle's on his way over as we speak, and we look forward to welcoming him back into the group. He'll likely train with us on Friday with a mind to being available for Saturday's game."

New Zealand has faced a series of injuries during this World Cup, with star batsman Kane Williamson (thumb) and all-rounder Mark Chapman (thigh) currently sidelined. The team suffered a significant setback when they were handed a resounding 190-run defeat by South Africa in their most recent match.

Despite this loss, New Zealand remain in contention for a spot in the semi-finals. With two group games remaining and victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their sights, the Black Caps aim to secure their place among the top four teams in the tournament.
