Britain's Kyle Edmund suffered a straight-sets defeat by Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Edmund, Britain's last hope of the tournament, was defeated 6-4 7-5 by his 19-year-old Canadian opponent in one hour, 53 minutes.

The 23-year-old held off five break points in the first set but failed to take advantage of his own break opportunities and eventually lost his serve in the final game.

Edmund failed to recover in the second set, falling below par on his first service game and handing his opponent an early 2-0 lead.

The Brit fought back and managed to level the score at 4-4, saving a match point at 5-5.

But Shapovalov dominated with a number of impressive backhands and despite needing four match points, ultimately broke Edmund's serve to advance to the third round on his tournament debut.

Edmund follows fellow Briton Andy Murray in being eliminated early from the competition, with the former world No 1 exiting on Monday after losing to Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the first round.
