Kyle Edmund crashes out of US Open after losing in five sets to Pablo Andujar

Kyle Edmund has crashed out of the US Open after a first round defeat to Pablo Andujar.

The British number one, seeded 30th for the tournament, will be disappointed to have bowed out after twice coming back from a set down to force the decider.

Edmund secured a break in the final set but a series of blunders allowed the unseeded Spaniard to win six games in a row and seal a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 success.

It's the second year in a row that Edmund has failed to make it past the first round of the men's singles at Flushing Meadows.

He could now lose his seeding in the WTA rankings with the 24-year-old likely to drop outside of the top 32 players in the world.

That leaves Dan Evans as the only British man left in the draw following Cameron Norrie's defeat - also in five sets - on Monday.

Earlier, Edmund had recovered from dropping his opening service game to take the first set with relatively little drama, and looked on course for a routine win when a break up in the second.

The clubbing Edmund forehand was cranking up to speed and Andujar was struggling to stay with him.

But suddenly a sloppy service game saw Edmund 0-40 down and Andujar, ranked 70 in the world, took advantage before running away with the tie-break.

Andujar has struggled with injuries for much of his career but he was suddenly looking the sprightlier as the rallies progressed.

He nicked a tight third set, Edmund responded in kind in the fourth, but he came up short in the decider as Andujar celebrated a first Flushing Meadows win since 2014.
