Kyle Edmund crashes out after defeat vs Dusan Lajovic to cap torrid day for Britain at Australian Open

Kyle Edmund has been eliminated from the Australian Open after losing in straight sets to Dusan Lajovic.

The British number two succumbed to a 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 defeat in two hours and 45 minutes of play on Court 15.

The Briton had been 5-2 up on Monday before rain arrived in Melbourne, forcing organisers to suspend play on the outer courts.

Having resumed early on Tuesday, the 25-year-old appeared to lose all of his momentum after being broken by the in-form Serbian and was forced to a first-set tiebreak, which he lost 9-7.

Lajovic, who recently helped his country win the ATP Cup along with Novak Djokovic, looked in inspired form to take the second set 6-3.

Edmund, who arrived in good form after some stellar displays in the Davis Cup for Great Britain, battled hard in the third set only to be narrowly beaten again in the tiebreak.

It marks a disappointing end to the tournament for Edmund, who reached the semi-finals in Melbourne in 2018.

He followed Johanna Konta in failing to make it past the first hurdle after her surprise defeat to Ons Jabeur.
