Kyle Edmund needed only seven more minutes and 10 more points to complete his win over Jeremy Chardy at Roland Garros on Tuesday morning.
The Brit, 24, was on court for just under four hours on Monday night before his first-round match was suspended in the final set due to bad light.
A big-hitting match of changing fortunes had been called off just before 9.30pm with the score at 5-5. Edmund, keeping his nerve, held serve on the resumption and in the next game Frenchman Chardy made two successive forehand errors as the world No30 won 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. He now faces Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the second round.
Edmund, who had arrived here on a five-match losing streak, said afterwards: “I knew coming out it was very important and there was no room for error.
"Also after last night, there was fatigue. You’ve just got to push through it. I knew I could up the intensity.
“Best-of-five is a marathon, but this was a sprint today and I just went for it.”
