Kyle Brandt: Chase Young won’t break Jevon Kearse’s rookie sack record

The expectations are already high for the Washington Redskins’ No. 2 overall pick, Chase Young, but will he be able to break the rookie sack record of former Tennessee Titans defensive end, Jevon Kearse?

Kearse was a beast in his first season in the NFL, totaling 14.5 sacks for the Titans in 1999, which earned him a Pro Bowl appearance and a nod as a First-Team All-Pro after being selected with the No. 16 overall pick.

Kyle Brandt of “Good Morning Football” explained why he believes Kearse’s record is safe from Young.

“As much as we’re marveling about the measurements and how big he is and everything, do not sleep on Jevon Kearse,” Brandt said. “I’m not going to sit here and disrespect ‘The Freak’ out of Florida just because Chase Young’s got some big muscles. You know what the reason is that Chase Young is not going to break this record? It’s probably Dwayne Haskins. The offense has to put up points to give you opportunities as a defense. Jevon Kearse broke this on a Super Bowl team…”

Brandt went on to show some serious respect for the special player Kearse was.

“And I’d also like to say a lot of people are called ‘The Freak’ these days, it’s a very ubiquitous nickname,” Brandt said. “Giannis (Antetokounmpo) is ‘The Greak Freak’, there’s freaks all over. No, this was “The Freak”, Jevon Kearse… And as much as I love Chase Young and I support someone bringing a tape measure into the weight room, I don’t know if you can live up to this dude (Kearse) right here, he was a maniac…”

In his first five seasons with Tennessee, Kearse totaled 47.5 sacks in 66 games. After moving on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014 and spending four seasons there, Kearse finished his career with the Titans.
