Kyle Allen to undergo surgery on dislocated ankle; will miss remainder of 2020 season

There was some thinking on Sunday afternoon that Washington quarterback Kyle Allen may not need to receive surgery on his dislocated ankle suffered in a loss to the Giants, which put his recovery time in question. However, it’s being reported on Monday morning that Allen will indeed undergo surgery, and the rest of his 2020 season will be spent recovering.

Going forward, though, Allen’s future, especially in Washington, is yet to be determined. There is no question that the young QB can eventually work his way back into playing shape and have a future in the NFL, However, it’s unclear if that future will be in Washington. With a need for a franchise QB, not many people believed that Allen was the answer for Rivera and the offense beyond just this season when the team will likely try to find someone new in either the NFL Draft or free agency. With Alex Smith now at the helm, it arguably makes more sense to keep him around as the QB2 in future years to help teach and groom a young QB, rather than Allen, who is a young QB himself.

We won’t know more about what Washington is going to do at the QB position for a few more weeks, at which point the pathway for their 2020 season will become clear, based on if they are able to win a couple of games coming up or not. Regardless, though, it’s fair to say that Allen’s time in Washington might have come to an end on Sunday.
