KV Oostende provide update on former Rangers kid Dapo Mebude

KV Oostende has provided a positive update on the condition of former Rangers player Dapo Mebude.

The 22-year-old was today rushed to hospital following a car crash in Belgium.

The forward's vehicle collided with a tree at an exit in Loppem on Sunday. He was subsequently taken to hospital where his condition was said to be 'critical'.

It's believed the forward was traveling to a practice match, with Oostende confirming this had been cancelled as a result.

Now, it's been revealed by the Belgian side that Mebude has undergone successful surgery.

A short statement reads: "Dapo Mebude underwent successful surgery after his accident.

"Tomorrow we will get more information about his situation. We thank the medical staff of AZ Brugge for the good care.

"We think of Dapo and his family and wish them much strength and recovery."

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The local prosecutors office is quoted as saying: “It is not clear how the accident could have happened.

“The public prosecutor's office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the precise circumstances of the accident.”

Mebude came through the ranks at Auchenhowie having joined Rangers aged 11.

He broke into the first team fold under Steven Gerrard and made his senior debut on the final day of the 2018/19 season in a 2-1 loss at Kilmarnock.

After a loan spell to gain some much-needed first-team experience at Queen of the South, the Scotland Under-21 international left Ibrox in 2021 to sign for Watford.

He also played at Wimbledon on loan before making the move to Belgium with Oostende.

Rangers sent their well-wishes to their former player online earlier today.

A post reads: "The thoughts of everyone at #RangersFC are with our former Academy player, Dapo Mebude and his family at this time."
