Kuwait Nominates Al-Ghais for OPEC Chief Post

CAPTION: Haitham Al-Ghais, Asharq Al-Awsat

Kuwaiti Ministry of Oil on Tuesday nominated ex-Kuwaiti governor to Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Haitham Al-Ghais for the OPEC Secretary-General’s post, to succeed outgoing chief Mohammad Barkindo whose term ends in July.

In a statement, the ministry said that Al-Ghais has been OPEC Kuwait’s governor since 2017 and chaired the joint technical committee between OPEC and non-OPEC countries.

He also chaired the organization’s internal check committee and has many contributions at the organization, it added.

Al-Ghais has extensive experience extending over nearly 30 years in the field of global oil markets and the oil industry and has a wide presence and participation in many international oil conferences and forums.

He was previously in charge of KPC’s regional offices in Beijing and London before becoming governor to OPEC in 2017.

Al-Ghais has participated in many specialized global market studies and enjoys wide support and deep-rooted relations with representatives of all OPEC member countries as well as with oil-producing countries from outside the organization.
