Kuwait MP Files to Grill PM over Storm Damage

Kuwaiti lawmaker Shuaib Al-Muwaizri filed to grill Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah for alleged mismanagement over damage caused by heavy downpour.

The rainstorm left devastating effects on the country with one death being reported. The army and national guard were mobilized to help clear water from critical facilities and roadways and the Kuwait Oil Company announced a state of emergency.

National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem said he received Muwaizri’s demand and that the questioning of the PM will be most likely debated on Nov. 27. The grilling is being filed for based on Article 135 of the National Assembly’s bylaws.

Muwaizri took to Twitter after filing for the questioning, saying his move was driven over the alleged failure to take the necessary actions to face heavy rains and flash floods that hit the country in the past two weeks, causing heavy damage.

He challenged the PM to prove to the public that all government bodies did not fail in light of the recent catastrophe.

Earlier, the lawmaker vowed to question the prime minister if the government does not resign over the issue. He was among several MPs who called for the government's resignation.

Parliamentarians’ outrage was not quelled by Public Works Minister Hussam Al-Roumi resigning, and demanded the entire government to step down.

“Out of my moral responsibility ... I have submitted my resignation to the prime minister,” Roumi had said when resigning.

Muwaizri considered it inconceivable that in the face of such a disaster befalling the people of Kuwait that the prime minister being let off the hook by simply making promises to hold those responsible accountable.

“The people are suffering and losing their property,” he exclaimed while addressing what he considered the prime minister dodging responsibilities.
