Kuwait: Motion against PM Referred to Legislative Committee

Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim said Tuesday a motion against Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah would be referred to the legislative committee to look into its constitutionality.

Following an in-camera session, Ghanim said: "The prime minister has asked for referring the query request to the parliamentary legislative committee to decide whether it is constitutional. The assembly has consented to the request."

"The National Assembly has considered and then okayed the government's request for an in-camera session. It then looked into the interpellation itself," he added.

Ghanim told reporters that referring the motion to the legislative committee was preceded by a discussion of both opposers and supporters, and then voting.

The session was held in-camera at the behest of Minister of Justice and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs Fahad Al-Afasi, in compliance with article (69) of the National Assembly statute.

The motion against the PM includes claims about lack of government policies, conflicting retrenchment plans and failure to defend national identity.

The speaker noted that the assembly intends to hold intensive sessions in June to discuss budgets and conclusive calculations of government bodies, in addition to enacting several laws.
