The Polish capital is preparing to host on Wednesday an international conference “to promote peace and stability in the Middle East”, with the participation of dozens of countries and organizations.
While attention will be greatly focused on attitudes towards Iran’s behavior in the region, the US-Polish sponsored conference will also be a rare occasion for President Donald Trump’s administration to present some outlines of its peace plan between Palestinians and Israelis.
The plan is expected to be announced after Israel’s April 9 elections. A senior US administration official told Asharq Al-Awsat that adviser to Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner would attend the conference to present to the participating foreign ministers the latest outcome on the peace plan - known as the “Deal of the Century.”
“Kushner plans to report on how the team dealt with the project (the peace plan) in an integrated format, but without going into partial details,” the official said.
“He also plans to respond to the questions of the participating foreign ministers.”
It will be the first broad debate with foreign countries on some aspects of the plan, which has been so far kept secret by the Americans.
If Kushner was able to win the support of the foreign ministers of major countries participating in the Warsaw conference, it could give his efforts a boost before heading to the Middle East later this month, along with Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s envoy for the peace process.
The US administration official said Kushner and Greenblatt would be touring a number of countries in the region this month, but would only focus on the economic aspect of the peace plan.
However, he stressed that the two US officials “know from day one that an economic solution alone is not enough to solve this complex problem. But they see it (the economic aspect of the plan) as very important for improving the lives of Palestinians, without which it would be difficult to achieve a sustainable peace agreement.”
