Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Kurobe Dam in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture, opened its floodgates on Saturday, kicking off an annual water release event that marks the arrival of summer in the Northern Alps region.

During daylight hours through Oct. 15, between 10 and 15 tons of water per second will be discharged from the dam, as a measure to protect the scenic ecosystem in the Kurobe Gorge downstream.

Situated 1,454 meters above sea level, the Kurobe Dam is the tallest arch dam in Japan, measuring 186 meters tall.

When the valves opened at 6 a.m. on the day, a cascade of water erupted into the air, captivating tourists who visited to photograph the spectacle.
