Fans of a famous Turkish singer have suggested Million Years Ago by Adele was “stolen” by the British musician.

The ballad is on Adele’s latest album, 25, and its lyrics chronicle the perils of fame and isolation. This week, followers of the late Ahmet Kaya have claimed that her album track bares similarities to his 1985 song Acilara Tutunmak (Clinging to Pain).

“Adele has stolen from us,” one user wrote on Twitter, while another shared an image of the two singers with the caption: “God damn you, thief.”

Kaya was a prominent Kurdish singer from Malatya, Turkey, who died in exile in Paris in 2000. After the singer’s fans spoke out on social media, Kaya’s widow, Gülten Kaya, told reporters she did not think international star like Adele would plagiarise a song. She added: “If she consciously did it then it would be theft”, when speaking with Turkish daily Posta, via AFP.

Adele’s spokesperson has not responded to these statements.

Listen to a fan-made mashup of the two tracks below.
