Kristoffer Ajer transfer news as Newcastle 'still want' Celtic star despite Rangers struggle

Newcastle sent scouts to Ibrox to watch Kristoffer Ajer - and Steve Bruce is intent on pushing for the centre back, according to a report.

The centre back struggled as his side were beaten 4-1 by Rangers in the final Old Firm derby of the season, but it's believe Newcastle still want to sign him.

They had scouts at Ibrox and Ajer is valued at £8million, which Newcastle feel is a good deal for a defender at his age and potential moving forward.

It's a major drop on the money Celtic initially wanted for the Norwegian but with just one year left on his deal, they have lost a lot of their bargaining power.

And now the Scottish Sun say Newcastle are determined to get him south of the border, but they do face competition from other English Premier League clubs.

Norwich are also believed to be interested in signing Ajer and the newly-promoted outfit are looking to do a quick deal for Ajer this summer.

Ajer took over the captaincy on Sunday when Scott Brown was subbed off but he struggled to make an impact against Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Kent during a difficult 90 minutes.

He did impress with his attacking runs out of defence, which were Celtic's most creative outlet in the game.
