Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer has signed a new four-year contract with the west London club.

Ajer’s contract was due to expire in 2028. but the centre-back has extended his deal until the summer of 2030, with a club option of a further year.

The 27-year-old joins Vitaly Janelt in committing his long-term future to the Bees.

Ajer has struggled with injury in recent years, but has become an increasingly important player under head coach Keith Andrews, starting each of Brentford’s last five league games.

The versatile defender, who can also play full-back, moved to west London in a £13.5million deal from Celtic in 2021 after the Bees were promoted to the Premier League.

On Ajer’s new contract, Andrews praised the Norwegian’s versatility and said he was an important part of the club’s culture.

“I am delighted that Kris has agreed a new deal,” Andrews said.

“He has been here since the start of the Premier League era, and he has played a big role at the club - not just on the pitch, but off it as well.

“Kris is a really popular character amongst the other players, and he is an experienced player now.

“He is someone who falls into a bracket I want to keep hold of, rather than looking elsewhere to sign players.

“Sometimes, as a coach, you can be too keen to look over the fence instead of looking at what is already in your own garden.

“He has been a very versatile defender for us, and a big part of the culture of the group.”
