Kristoffer Ajer 'could leave' Celtic before Eddie Howe arrives as Newcastle United step up transfer interest

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to step up interest in Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

The centre-back is among a number of Parkhead stars who could leave the club this summer.

And the Daily Record say the Norwegian may well be on his way before incoming boss Eddie Howe gets his feet under the table.

It's said Toon boss Steve Bruce is keen to beat Norwich City in the race to sign Ajer and is poised to make his move early.

Newcastle have scouted the 23-year-old extensively this season and suspect they can land him for around £8million.

Ajer's future could be one of the first issues to land in Howe's inbox, with an official appointment expected by the end of this week.

He's one of several players - including Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard - entering the final year of his deal with seemingly little indication he's willing to extend his stay with Celtic.
