Kristjaan Speakman's verdict on 'criticial' head coach role as Sunderland appoint Lee Johnson

Sunderland's new sporting director Kristjaan Speakman believes the role of head coach at the club will be critical for the success of the new project.

The Black Cats appointed former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson as their new head coach today, and he will take charge of the first team for today's game against Wigan Athletic.

Johnson has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the Stadium of Light, and joined Speakman as new arrivals on Wearside.

Speakman was confirmed as the club's sporting director on Friday, after leaving Birmingham City following 14 years at St Andrew's.

And speaking after Johnson's unveiling today, he underlined how important Johnson's new role was.

“The role of our Head Coach is going to be critical in delivering the strategy we have collectively established," he said,

"This aligned approach has enabled us to create a profile for the position and following a rigorous process, I felt Lee was the outstanding candidate.

"I believe he understands the complexities of the project and I’m looking forward to supporting him in his role to bring sustained success to the football club.”
