Kristen Stewart 'told to stop holding hands with her girlfriend so she could land a role in a Marvel film'

Kristen Stewart has said she was told to be less affectionate with her girlfriend in public so she could land a role in a Marvel film.

The actress, 29, said she was “informed by an old-school mentality” of keeping certain things about her personal life a secret.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Stewart, who was in an on-off relationship with supermodel Stella Maxwell from 2016 until earlier this year, said: “I have fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favour, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.’

"I don’t want to work with people like that.”

Stewart added that she's learnt to be herself because she “just wanted to enjoy my life”.

“Like what, you can’t go outside with who you’re with? You can’t talk about it in an interview?” she said.

“I was informed by an old-school mentality, which is – you want to preserve your career and your success and your productivity, and there are people in the world who don’t like you, and they don’t like that you date girls, and they don’t like that you don’t identify as a quote unquote ‘lesbian’, but you also don’t identify as a quote unquote ‘heterosexual’.

“And people like to know stuff, so what the f*** are you?”

Stewart previously dated her Twilight saga co-star Robert Pattinson from 2009 until 2012.

Discussing their relationship, she said: “When me and Rob were together, we did not have an example to go by.

Courage: Stewart says she's enjoying living her life now (Harper’s Bazaar UK/ Alexi Lubomirski)

“So much was taken from us that, in trying to control one aspect, we were just like, ‘No, we will never talk about it. Never. Because it’s ours.’”

Stewart is set to star as Sabina Wilson in a Charlie’s Angels reboot which is being directed by Elizabeth Banks.

The film, which also stars Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, will be released on November 29.

The October issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale from Thursday September 5.
