Intense media speculation around Kristen Stewart’s love life began when she starred in the Twilight films alongside her former boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Following their highly publicised split, Stewart has been photographed with rumoured girlfriends but always kept quiet about her relationships, no matter how many time various publications have pried.
Stewart adopts the same mantra when it comes to her being asked about her sexuality, however, the reasons for this are that she simply does not categorise or label her sexuality and has no time for people who fail to understand this.
“Me not defining it right now is the whole basis of what I’m about,” Stewart told Variety. “If you don’t get it, I don’t have time for you.”
The actress discussed the increasing amount of young people who are choosing not to label their sexuality and adopt a more fluid approach, a movement which she says is important. “There’s acceptance that’s become really rampant and cool. You don’t have to immediately know how to define yourself.”
Despite being firm on the matter now, the 26-year-old explains she used to feel pressured to define her sexuality.
“I had to have some answer about who I was,” she says. “I felt this weird responsibility because I didn’t want to seem fearful. But nothing seemed appropriate. So I was like ‘F**k, how do I define that?’ I’m not going to."
Last year when questioned on her sexuality, Stewart replied: “Google me, I'm not hiding anything.” This is a point she's reiterated again while affirming that her relationships are something she continues to keep private. “When I was dating a guy, I would never talk about my relationships to anyone,“ she says. ”I feel the same way now. I’m not hiding sh*t.”
She has also previously spoken about the advancement of the sexually fluid movement, saying: “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like just do your thing."
A number of high-profile individuals have publicly shunned labels when it comes to their sexuality such as Miley Cyrus, George Shelley and Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell who last week said: "Right now I'm dating a guy. I don't know what I'll be doing in three years [...] I'm never going to label myself."
