Kristen Stewart has revealed she felt “scared” during a recent road trip after she entered “Trumpian territory”.

The actor plays a gay woman who must pretend to be her girlfriend’s platonic friend when she visits her family for Christmas in the new film Happiest Season. Stewart has said that she identified with the struggles depicted in the comedy.

“Living in a world where holding the hand of the person you love can make you or others uncomfortable,” she explained to The i. She added that she recently had similar fears during a recent road trip.

“I entered some, like, Trumpian territory, and I felt scared,” Stewart said. “I have experience of trying to shape what my experience looks like for others, for it to be digestible and not threatening.”

Stewart also said that she felt pressure to “put a label” on her sexuality growing up. “I was like, ‘That doesn’t really work for me’,” she explained.

The Personal Shopper actor, who will portray Princess Diana in a forthcoming film, last week (20 November) revealed her love for the Christmas romcom genre. She did, however, confess to “feeling weird” about one of the storylines in the Richard Curtis classic Love Actually.

“I felt a little weird about the guy who… Colin Firth is going after someone he’s really never spoken to,” Stewart recalled. “And I understand that love transcends language barriers, but at the same time…”

Happiest Season, which also stars Mackenzie Davis, Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie, has been dubbed a “delicate, relishable piece of Yuletide joy” by The Independent.
