Kristen Johnston's sister dead: Actress pays tribute to tragic sibling who battled addiction

Kristen Johnston is mourning the loss of her sister Julie who died yesterday after battling addiction.

The actress, 51, confirmed the sad news in a post on Twitter today.

She wrote: "Yesterday my beautiful younger sister Julie lost her battle with addiction.

"I know she’s finally at peace. She had the best belly laugh in the world."

Fans flocked to offer their condolences, with one writing: "I am so sorry. My sister lost her battle 10 years ago. I miss her terribly but knowing that she is no longer hurting & sad it a great comfort."

Another tweeted: "I am so very sorry. Having lost a child to addiction, I know how hard and complicated it is to grieve.

"May the memories of your sister, even the difficult ones, someday be a blessing to you. She was loved, and her life was precious."

The third 3rd Rock from the Sun star did not share any further details about the tragedy.

Julie is believed to have been a mother to three daughters.

Kristen previously shared a picture of herself posing with her mum and sister Julie as well as her sibling's girls.

It was taken on the set of her TV show The Exes, and the telly star captioned the shot: "The Johnston women....My mom, my sister Julie, and her 3 gorgeous girls... on the set of 'the exes'."

While she has rarely spoken about Julie's troubles, Kristen has been open about her own battle with addiction.

In her book Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster, the actress revealed she became hooked on drugs as a teenager before turning her life around.

She admitted being addicted to painkiller Vicodin and said she used to down two bottles of wine a day before seeking rehab treatment.
