Kristen Bell says she tried hallucinogenic mushrooms to help manage depression

Kristen Bell has candidly opened up about her 22 year battle with depression and the methods she's used to try to combat it.

The Veronica Mars star, 40, revealed she tried psychedelic drugs in a bid to manage depression and says her husband Dax Shepard was there to "babysit her".

The actress said she has tried every type of treatment, including medications, meditation and talking with a therapist.

And she opened up about how she was dealing with her mental health in a chat on actor Sean Hayes and Dr. Priyanka Wali's new podcast, Hypochondriactor.

She told the hosts she was inspired to tried hallucinogenic mushrooms after she read Michael Pollan's book titled How to Change Your Mind.

She said: "He really goes into detail about this underground academic community that has continued to study the effects of LSD and psilocybin on what they call 'healthy normal'."

And she said she tried psilocybin to try to find out if it could improve her mental health.

A small study co-authored by Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, head of the centre for psychedelic research at Imperial College London, found that two doses of psilocybin looked to be as effective as a common antidepressant in treating some cases of depression.

However, the doctor cautioned people against seeking out magic mushrooms, which is a a class A drug in the UK, for DIY treatment.

Kristen continued: "I really wanted to try some psilocybin and feel what kind of doors open, have a trip that was my own."

"There are aspects to those two particular drugs that the places you can go in your brain are much deeper and more healing than anything else."

But she insisted that she had to be in a comfortable surrounding and told how husband Dax, 46, was happy to be there with her.

The Bad Moms star said her husband took her for a walk during the experiment.

She went on to describe her visions and thoughts during her experience and said she is in a better place when it comes to her depression and anxiety now.

However, she did admit that is still "comes in waves".

"But my waves are never suicidal or anything,'"she said. "So I'm very lucky because that does happen to people."
