Kristen Bell’s latest anniversary tribute to husband Dax Shepard has divided fans online, after she shared a questionable caption that some felt crossed the line.
The Nobody Wants This star marked 12 years of marriage on Instagram this past Friday, writing: “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivised to kill you, I never would.’ ❤️,” alongside a photo of the couple cuddling.

The post, which Bell shared on October 17, came during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the US — and the timing hasn’t gone unnoticed. Fans quickly flooded the comments to call the caption “not funny” and “in poor taste”.
One user wrote: “Domestic violence isn’t a joke,” while another pointed out that “worldwide a woman is killed every ten minutes by their partner… #stopviolenceagainstwomen”.

Not everyone agreed, though. Several followers defended the post, saying Bell’s words were an inside joke between her and Shepard. “I was in an abusive relationship and I got out. This post is meant for her husband, not all of us,” one user commented.

Amid the back-and-forth, Bell has since limited comments on the post, but it remains visible on her feed, where it’s received over 690,000 likes.
Bell and Shepard, who tied the knot in 2013 and share daughters Lincoln and Delta, have long been open about their sometimes unconventional marriage. In September, Shepard reflected on their relationship during his Armchair Expert podcast, saying: “If Kristen and I ever split up, I would only describe this as still an enormously successful relationship.”
Just weeks later, the pair made headlines again when Shepard joked that Bell is “a little regretful” about not being more sexually adventurous before they got together — comments Bell playfully agreed with during a joint podcast appearance. In early October, Shepard addressed a tabloid rumour that the couple are swingers, clarifying: “It’s not true”, though he was quick to add there’s room for “an open dialogue” about relationships.

Despite the recent backlash, Bell has continued sharing moments from their life together, never shying away from humour that reflects the pair’s candid dynamic — even if it occasionally stirs the pot.
