Krispy Kreme reveals expansion plans for junction 27 donut house near Leeds

A Krispy Kreme store near Leeds is set to get bigger and better as refurb plans are revealed.

The donut house, off junction 27 of the M62, wants to expand so it can produce more of its mouth-watering donuts - and give the customer dining area a fresh look.

The Birstall venue was the first Yorkshire branch of the iconic US chain when it opened by the Showcase cinema in the summer of 2011.

Kirklees Council has granted planning permission for the works, which will see the rear of the building expanded to increase the size of the store by 20 per cent.

The Birstall store is responsible for producing doughnuts for other outlets across the north east and the revamp is set to improve that facility.

Krispy Kreme chiefs say they will also facelift the customer area, where people can watch the doughnuts being made through a glass window.

Alex Drysdale, Operations Director for UK & Ireland at Krispy Kreme, said: "Leeds/Birstall is one of our unique Doughnut Theatre stores, where our team lovingly create hand-finished doughnuts for customers in-store every day.

"These doughnuts are also delivered to other stores in the area to ensure customers can enjoy our freshly made Krispy Kreme treats.

"We have permission to create a bigger Birstall store, extending our production facilities so we can so that we can deliver our fresh doughnuts to even more locations every day."

The extension will see the rear of the building, adjacent to Gelderd Road, moved out slightly, giving roughly a 20% increase in the size of the premises.

The planning statement says: "The proposed design will provide Krispy Kreme much needed additional space to resolve many operational issues relating to storage, deliveries and processing of their product which supports an extended network of locations in the north east.

"In doing so, the front of house retail area will be much improved too and ultimately will be refurbished as part of this development."
